Player Profile: Kaila Borgomastro

With the countdown on until the World Cup in August - its time to get to know our WA representatives! We have asked them all a series of questions about their baseball lives.

Our first player profile is Kaila Borgomastro - here is what she had to say.

How long have you been playing baseball and what/how/who/why got you interested in playing baseball?

I’ve been around the diamond since I was 3, I had grown up watching my older brother play t-ball, I would always be the annoying kid that would try to join into their training sessions.

As I turned 6 I jumped at the opportunity to start playing myself, as t-ball ended I naturally progressed onto baseball playing juniors at the Melville Braves and then after a couple of year I moved over to the women’s league.

What clubs have you played for and how important have they been in your development?

In Perth I’ve only ever played for the Braves Baseball Club. Recently I played a year of baseball in Melbourne for the Footscray Bulldogs. Both clubs have been a huge asset to my development, they become like a second home at times, and I have no doubt that I wouldn’t be as good a player without their help over the years.

How do you think the women's state programme has evolved during your years of involvement?

Over the last 10 years I think the women’s state program has had its up and down for sure! But when we look back at how far the program as a whole has come, its quite amazing. To be considered one of the best teams at nationals year after year is a testament to all the years of hard work all the coaches and players are putting in.

What are some of your best memories from baseball?

Would have to be 2010 and 2012 National Championships.

Biggest game day superstition?

I’m a quite a superstitious person... Tournaments usually bring them all out of me, especially when we’re on a winning streak or I’m playing well myself… I usually like to keep things the same, from my socks to my pre-game routine.

Who is the best player you have played with and against and why?

Christina Kreppold - when I first started playing in the women’s league at 14 I was lucky enough to be in the same team as Krep. I personally think that she is the strongest and most well rounded player that I’ve seen, it’s been awesome to watch over the years.

Who has been the most influential person on your baseball career to date?

Hard to narrow it down to just one person. Definitely my parents and the number of coaches I’ve had over the years.

What does it mean to you to pull on the Green and Gold and represent your country?

Means the world! Can’t wait.

What are your hopes for the World Cup? Can we win the Gold?

We’ve got a great group of players and a very skilled coaching staff, I definitely have high hopes for this years world cup. We are just going to go out there, play hard and leave nothing in the tank and hopefully that’ll be enough to take home a gold medal!
